Overview

This project aimed to improve the user interface design of PChome website. According to our research and interview, there were a lot of PChome users not being satisfied with their current user experience. We started from understanding the users’ pain point and their current user journey, to coming up with solutions that may be helpful to them. Finally, we drafted the wireframe of the website as an improvement plan.

My Role

User interview
Prototype testing
Wireframe design

Phase 1. Assumption

We first made some assumptions of the PChome users, so that we could verified our assumptions during the user research process.

  •  Their current user experience on PChome

  •  What they usually do on PChome

  •  Their current user journey on PChome

Phase 2. Interview

Interviewee requirements:
1.    Age: 18-34 or 35-54
2.    Having experience shopping online and using PChome.

According to the second-hand materials, we found that both 18-34 and 35-54 year-old users were PChome target users, so we decided to interview them both and see which group of users have a stronger dissatisfaction of the web.

7 interviews were conducted, including 4 college students, all 21 years old, and 3 office workers who were 35-54 years old.

User journey

Take one of the common user activities, buying electric goods, for example. We drew out the brief user journey as below, and described the users’ expectations and needs during each process.

Insight

We found that users between 18-34 years old had a higher expectation on user interface and they hoped that PChome could redesign their web. In contrast, interviewees between 35-54 years old were mostly satisfied with their current experience on PChome.

We assumed that it was because younger users were more experienced in using online platforms, so the comparatively outdated design of PChome did not suit their taste.

Phase 3. Ideation

Stakeholder map

We believed that it was important to understand the needs of each stakeholder related to PChome before we started the ideation.

Therefore, we listed out the three main stakeholders, the consumer, the seller, and the PChome platform itself.

Use cases

Based on the current user feedback and stakeholder neds, we started to brainstorming about how to improve the PChome web system. We came up with several ideas and listed them out as use cases.

Here is the example of the use cases in the shopping cart page.

Second, we classified the use cases according to their importancy.

Card sorting

The use cases above were written down on cards and given to users to generate the category tree. Here is a screenshot of our card sorting result.

Information architecture

A brief information architecture was made based on the card sorting result.

Phase 4. Prototype

We used wireframe to present our prototype. According to the previous user feedback, we found some obvious problems of PChome web and here were our solutions.

The obvious problems we found

Incomplete functions

ex, filter login, tracking list, etc

Confusing sorting list

Disorganized layout

Our solutions

Complete the filter and ordering function

Improve login experience

Simplify the sorting list

Phase 5. Usability test

3 main use cases were selected to do the testing. Including:

  • Search product

  • Add items into the tracking list

For example, here is the use case of “search product”

Usability test script

We drafted out the usability test script focusing on the 3 use cases above, to understand whether the revised version of PChome web was well-designed or not, and in which part may our users be stuck.

The next step

  • Keep improving the system based on the user test feedback

  • Dive into the needs of users between 35-54 years old

  • Make the PChome web functional, fast, and considerate
